@lualmayen is a South Sudanese video game developer based in Washington DC, the founder of @junubgames and brains behind the Salaam Video Game.

Salaam (Peace in Arabic) took Mayen, then a refugee in a refugee camp in Northern Uganda, about 6 months to develop from scratch.

Players assume the identity of a refugee escaping from a conflict zone and have to gather resources like food, water and medicine to keep alive.

Mayen plans to partner with non-profit organisations so that when players on Salaam buy food, water and medicine, they are in reality buying those essentials for people in actual refugee camps.

@scharlletteallen Moses was the first black woman to win the Miss Nicaragua title and represent her country in the 2010 Miss Universe pageant.

Moses is from Bluefields which is home to the largest black settlement on the East Coast of Nicaragua. The city is also heavily associated with Black Creole culture.

Furthermore, Afro-Nicaraguans are known to be the largest group of African descent in Central America and are divided into 4 ethnic groups; Afro-mestizos, Afro-antilleans, Garifuna and Miskitos.

Together, they represent 9% of the population and most are settled on the Southeastern coast, the Mosquito coast in the Northeast near Honduras and in Bluefields.

Creole English, Spanish and Miskito are mostly spoken along the Eastern Coastal areas of Nicaragua.

And aside from producing a beauty queen, Bluefields is also the origin of Palo de Mayo referring to an Afro-Caribbean dance and month long May Day festival celebrated on the Caribbean Coast.

Verano Negro (black summer) is an Afro-Peruvian festival held yearly in El Carmen in the Chincha Province of Peru showcasing music, dance and food with African origins.

Afro-Peruvian dishes such as sopa seca and carapulcra are served and the Festejo and Zapateo dances performed.

As of 2017, Afro-Peruvians made up around 7-10% of the total Peru population occupying mainly the coastal areas South of Lima in Ica and Nazca cities.

Somali-American chef @hawahassan and celebrated American food writer, Julia @turshen have just co-authored a cookbook!

In Bibi's Kitchen: The Recipes and Stories of Grandmothers from the 8 African Countries touching the Indian Ocean ( A Cookbook) was published by Potter/TenSpeed/Harmony/Rodale in 2020.

This 288 page masterpiece is a collection of 75 recipes and stories gathered from Bibis (Grandmothers) in South Africa, Mozambique, Madagascar, Comoros, Tanzania, Kenya, Somalia and Eritrea.

The cookbook was released this October and features photography on location from @farahkhad and food photography by Jennifer May.

Hassan is also the founder and CEO of @basbaassauce a line of Somali condiments.
