Introducing Klur
Klur is a botanically based collection of skincare and multi-purpose self-care products founded by Lesley Thornton. The word Klur is derived from the Swedish word Klura meaning “this is well thought out/this is pondered.” Thornton simply dropped the A.
As an Esthetician and Formulator, she envisioned a brand reflecting the values of clean, ethical and inclusive beauty while promoting skin wellness. This pushed her to start selling her skincare product line in 2014 as bespoke products solely for her clients before eventually launching into the company it is today.
Klur is therefore described as an independent, self-funded, woman owned and operated company. Furthermore, Klur’s products are all plant-based, nature identical and clinically proven actives which are free of parabens, sulfates, fillers, fragrances and dyes.
Meet the Founder
Lesley Thornton grew up in Compton, California. She attributes her interest in beauty from a young age to her mom who ensured she kept busy engaging in various activities including fashion shows as a child. At the age of 18, she got her first retail make-up job. Thornton would use that experience she gained in her future positions at Estée Lauder, Laura Mercier and MAC.
Subsequently, she earned a degree from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. She would then go on to work as a Freelance Make-Up Artist. In 2010, Thornton began to realize that there was much interest in make-up but not as much in skincare. Eventually, this realization pushed her to go back to school to study Esthetics.
In 2012, she opened her first shop in Los Angeles. Her job entailed skin treatment while she slowly phased out her make-up gigs. In addition, she began formulating skin care products for her clients. The aim was for them to be able to care for their skin at home in between their appointments with her. This endeavor would eventually birth Klur, her beauty brand that is also particularly inclusive of melanin rich skin.
The next challenge then became developing high quality products that involved a low cost in production and retail. For a further 3 years, Thornton hence worked with chemists on the formulations. She also sourced for ingredients locally. As a result, a 7 piece collection came into being. This collection includes serums, face oils, a cleanser and an exfoliating powder called skin soil. The latter product is unique since it mixes into your cleanser unclogging pores and stimulating cell turnover, a key element for hyperpigmentation sufferers.
Customer Care at Klur only operates from Mondays to Fridays at 9am to 5pm.
